I. A typical handle failure occurs in the following manner:
- Chip buildup inside the tool holder leads to wear on the tool holder due to friction between the tool, workpiece, and chips.
- Intermittent cutting forces lead to fatigue on the tool holder surface.
- Tool holder deformation caused by cutting forces.
- Cutting heat and cutting temperature cause phase transformations in the tool holder material's structure.
- Handle oxidation and corrosion.
- Wear on spare parts, accessories, and mating surfaces.
2. How do you know when to replace your knife handle?
1. Inspect the machine tool spindle for wear and ensure proper alignment of the automatic tool changer
2. Worn spindles can lead to runout issues, compromising tool holder accuracy and reducing both the quality of workpieces that can be achieved and machining efficiency. The quality of a machine tool spindle can be assessed by checking its T.I.R. (Total Indicated Runout), among other methods.
3. Ensure proper alignment of the Automatic Tool Changer (ATC). If the ATC fails to securely hold the tool holder, it could damage both the spindle and the tool holder, significantly reducing tool performance and tool life.
3. Practical Guide to Knife Handle Maintenance
1. Regularly clean all accessories and spare parts, including the tool holder (both handle and cutting head) and the spindle. Apply a thin layer of oil when not in use to prevent oxidation.
2. Regularly remove the Graflex or Capto components for cleaning and inspection.
3. Store the knife handle in a clean, dry place.
4. Visually inspect the tool holder for signs of wear, such as micro-motion corrosion. At the same time, visually check all accessories and spare parts—including bushings, spindle pull studs, nuts, and more—and replace them if necessary.
5. Always use the specified installation and removal equipment.
6. Never tighten the screw beyond its specified torque limit. Do not attempt to fasten it without a torque wrench.
7. Do not exceed the recommended screw rotation speed of the hydraulic clamping system. Regularly adjust the pressure of the hydraulically actuated chuck using a calibrated gauge.
8. Don't let the fixture overheat.
9. Follow the tool's usage instructions.
